George C. Page and his Trap Pit Entanglement

When philanthropist George C. Page moved to California in 1917 he was just 16 years of age. His early infatuation with fossils quickly brought him to La Brea. To his disappointment, George found no skeletons at the site. No facility existed to house the fossils at the pit, so teams were forced to display their finds more than seven miles away at the Natural History Museum. After years of hard work and perseverance, George C. Page amassed a small business empire in Los Angeles, pioneering a number of important industrial parks. In 1973, Page made a considerable donation to La Brea, offering to finance the construction of an onsite museum facility. Construction on the compound began in 1975, and the museum was open for public use in 1977. The Page Museum has since opened a number of laboratories onsite, providing customers of Johnny Parks LAX Airport Parking with a sneak peak at actual archeological discoveries. Science, tourism and history all combine flawlessly inside this revolutionary museum, thanks almost entirely to one man and his passion for the past. The Page Museum functions as a satellite facility of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Dire Wolves and Saber-Toothed Tigers: The Predators at Page

The Page Museum was built to house more than one million important prehistoric specimens, all of which were recovered from the asphalt deposits at La Brea. More than 30 individual displays are current setup at the museum displaying more than 231 species of vertebrate, 159 different kinds of plants and 234 known invertebrates. Famous for it's collection of Ice Age predators, the Page Museum proudly feature complete skeletons of both saber-toothed tigers and dire wolves. The Museum also hosts robotic sculptures, hands-on displays and photo murals. Life-size animal reconstructions can be seen both inside and outside the museum, including the compound's famous mastodon family. More than 100 tar pits have been discovered and explored at La Brea, including the world-famous Pit 91. This pit has been under excavation since 1969. During the summer months, customers of Johnny Parks LAX Airport Parking can watch as museum staff paleontologists continue the painstaking fieldwork process.

The Page Museum at La Brea proudly displays one of the world's largest and most complete collections of Ice Age fossils.
