The Kings Three Eras

“The Forum Blue and Gold”

When the Kings first started their run in the NHL they were known as the “Forum Blue and Gold” hosting all of their home games at the Los Angeles Forum. The Kings would call the Forum home for the next 32 seasons, attracting thousands of loyal fans each season a s players like Billy “Cowboy” Flett and Eddie “The Jet” Joyal took to the ice ever night. In their first season the Kings finished a respectable second place in their division, trailing the dominant Philadelphia Flyers by just one point. By the 1970’s the Los Angeles Kings were becoming a popular household name in Los Angeles, as interest in hockey began to sweep the sunny beaches of California. Big management changes allowed the Kings to refocus during the following seasons acquiring major players like defenseman Bob Pulford and center Marcel Dionne. By 1979 the Kings boasted one of the NHL’s highest scoring line combinations ever, starting Dionne alongside Charlie Simmer and Dave Taylor.

“The Black and White Era”

During the late ‘80’s the Kings became what many LAX parking customers deemed and overnight cup contender, acquiring one of the leagues hottest up-and-coming superstars, Wayne Gretzky. In his first season with the team, The Great One helped lead the team to one of their most successful seasons, scoring 168 points, 54 goals and 114 assists, placing his team in second place in the Smythe Division. Gretzky would later lead the team to their first Division title in franchise history during the 1990-1991 season. The team would quickly progress to the top of the league leader board during the early ‘90’s making it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals in 1992-1993 where the y would eventually be beaten by the well-rested Montreal Canadiens. The Staples Center Era

The late 1990’s proved to be a rebuilding stage for the Los Angeles Kings as they were forced t let Gretzky go, acquiring players like Craig Johnson, Patrice Tardif and Roman Vopat from the St. Louis Blues. The Kings also made a literal move during the late ‘90’s taking their franchise to downtown Los Angeles and the newly built Staples Center Arena. Since then the team has gone on to build up some intense momentum, finishing third in the Pacific Conference during the last three seasons of play. This season could be the year that the Kings finally get their crown, so don’t forget to call ahead and reserve your Staples Center home game tickets today!
