The Walt Disney Music Hall project was launched back in 1987 with a gift of $50 million from Lilian Disney, Walt Disney's widow. Construction on the project began in 1992 with the building of an elaborate underground parking garage. Construction on the Hall hit a snag in 1994 due to mismanagement and disagreements over the building's design. Fundraising efforts began again in 1996, and groundbreaking celebrations were held in December of 1999. When the Concert Hall finally opened in 2003 it came with a price tag of more than $274 million. The other three existing LA Music Center Buildings cost just $35 million when they were built in the 1960s. But the problems don't end there. Additional expenses were spent to solve a flaw resulting from the building's use of polished concave stainless steel surfaces. Light glare from these surfaces concentrated in a manner similar to a parabolic mirror causing hot spots of more than 140 degrees on sidewalks adjacent to the building. Witnesses actually reported seeing the contents of numerous garage cans spontaneously combust as a result of the heat. Steps were quickly taken to eliminate this strange and dangerous side effect.
