Catalina Island was first inhabited by Native Americans and than by the Spanish. In 1846 it was acquired by its first American owner Thomas Robbins. Stock purchases made in 1919 by William Wrigley Jr. made him a key player in the company as he than owned a majority of the stock. In 1975, the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy, which is a not-for-profit foundation, gained the rights to about 88% of the Island, which is 76 square miles large.
Avalon is a city on Santa Catalina Island which has a population in the off season of 3,200 and during the summer months of 10,000. Approximately 30% of the land in Avalon is owned by private landholders, while the remaining 70% is held by the Santa Catalina Island Company. The most common form of transportation in the town is golf carts, bicycles and walking. Avalon is the only California city allowed to regulate the number of vehicles, as well as vehicle size on city streets.
